Molecular Breeding Solutions of Peanut

Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a naturally self-pollinated, allotetraploid (2n=40) leguminous crop. It is classified as a grain legume, and because of its high oil content, it is also classified as an oil crop. Like most other legumes, peanuts contain symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their root nodules. The ability to fix nitrogen means that peanuts require less nitrogenous fertilizers and improve soil fertility, making them valuable in crop rotation.

Because the genetic diversity of cultivated peanuts is narrow, and wild relatives have sufficient allelic diversity, wild relatives of peanuts provide valuable genetic resources for peanut variety improvement. Peanut breeders often cross between superior varieties to accumulate desirable characteristics, such as high yield, disease resistance, and improved nutritional status. The priority traits of peanut breeding include high pod yield, high quality and flavor, strong resistance to stress and disease, high oil content, early maturity, high shelling rate and so on. In recent years, the productivity of peanuts has increased significantly, which is attributed to major advances in modern agricultural breeding biotechnology such as genetics, genome sequences, molecular marker development, and QTL analysis. Based on traditional breeding methods (introduction, selection, mutation, hybridization, etc.) combined with molecular breeding methods (genomic sequence, molecular marker development, GWAS analysis, etc.) have been used to develop improved varieties.
