Breeding for Barley with More Tillers

Why Breed Barley with More Tillers?

Barley (Hordeum vulgare), the fourth largest harvested cereal in the world, which has several uses in human nutrition, animal feed and brewing. Interest in barley's potential for food breeding and exploitation has grown along with awareness of its nutritional and appealing properties. To increase barley productivity and create barley germplasm with more tillers, scientists have conducted the mechanisms relating to barley tiller. The number and size of tillers is greatly influenced by environmental factors and interplant competition and generally has a quantitative inheritance pattern. However, several simply inherited mutants decrease or increase the number of tillers per plant. Molecular breeding for barley with more tillers is one of the strategies to increase the yield of barley.

Breeding Services for Barley with More Tillers

Lifeasible is dedicated to advancing plant breeding research through molecular technologies. We have established a comprehensive molecular breeding technology platform that can provide numbers of methods to accelerate the breeding process of barley with more tillers.

  • QTL Mapping: A candidate gene approach which is performed in constructed bi- parental populations with contrasting parents to detect various QTLs and then estimate its position and effect on the plant traits after introgression.
  • Marker-assisted Selection: A type of indirect selection for the desired plant phenotype which is based on the linked molecular markers banding pattern.
  • Transgenics: biotechnological interventions, including genetic engineering, RNA silencing technologies, and gene editing.
