Breeding of Muscari aucheri
INQUIRYMuscari aucheri is an excellent perennial herbaceous ground cover plant introduced from Europe, a small flowering bulb plant. It is an excellent ground cover plant for landscaping because of its low plant height, bright flower color, early flowering period, long flowering time, and long green leaf period. Muscari aucheri is often used as a landscape plant or as a potted plant for home flowers. It also has effective ornamental effects as cut flowers.
Lifeasible has many years of ornamental plant breeding experience. With our advanced technology platform, we have developed Muscari aucheri varieties with many excellent traits, including special flower color and disease resistance. Our solutions are significant in Muscari aucheri breeding research.
Our breeding platform
Breeding new varieties of Muscari aucheri using genetic engineering technology
Most currently cultivated Muscari aucheri are hybrids that bloom mainly in purple and white, which are far from meeting the demand for color diversity in this flower. We have used genetic engineering techniques to improve Muscari aucheri breeding efficiency by transferring exogenous genes and obtaining new varieties with target traits. For example, we introduced the Delila gene, which controls the formation of red flowers, into Muscari aucheri somatic cells through Agrobacterium rosenbergii to achieve red flowers in the white variety of Muscari aucheri, resulting in new germplasm or new varieties of Muscari aucheri with red flowers.
Cultivation of new Muscari aucheri varieties using tissue culture
The traditional method of propagation of Muscari aucheri is based on the division of bulbs, which has a low reproduction rate and is diseased, resulting in severe degeneration of the variety and shrinking of the bulbs, in addition to resulting in dwarf plants and small flowers, which do not achieve good ornamental effects. To obtain the best propagation pathway for Muscari aucheri, we established a regeneration system using tissue culture technology. This greatly promoted Muscari aucheri research in vitro culture and laid the foundation for future breeding and genetic improvement.
In addition, we combined chromosome engineering technology based on Muscari aucheri tissue culture and polyploid induction using colchicine. This played a significant role in the research of breeding new varieties of Muscari aucheri with higher ornamental value.
