Breeding of Osteospermum

Osteospermum is a hosta or semi-shrub flower, which is a very suitable ground cover and potted flower with dense, colorful flowers and abundant bushes, and it has high ornamental value.

With biotechnology development, we have applied new breeding tools to Osteospermum breeding. These tools include tissue culture technology, molecular marker technology, and genetic engineering technology. For example, we have established an optimal regeneration system for Osteospermum using tissue culture technology and analyzed somatic asexual line variation by molecular marker technology. We have conducted innovative research on Osteospermum germplasm and create conditions for selecting and improving new Osteospermum varieties. In addition, we provide genetic engineering breeding techniques that solve many problems in traditional Osteospermum breeding, mainly in the form of targeted modification of one or some traits in flowers while keeping other traits unchanged, the introduction of foreign genes that can expand the gene pool, and ornamental indicators that can be easily judged by visual inspection only or with a few aids. Currently, we have used genetic engineering techniques to effectively modify the flowering period, flower color, plant shape, and resistance in Osteospermum.

What we offer

  • Flower color breeding. In Osteospermum flower color breeding, we have used genetic engineering techniques to change the flower color of Osteospermum by regulating the expression of genes involved in flavonoids synthesis as the main research object.
  • Osteospermum's cold-tolerant breeding has limited its use and promotion in some urban landscaping due to its moderate cold tolerance. The cold-resistant varieties we bred can expand Osteospermum's adaptation to cultivation sites.
  • Dwarf breeding. We use genetic engineering technology to breed dwarf Osteospermum varieties with compact shapes, large flower volume, gorgeous flower color, and a long flowering period. These varieties can be used as potted flowers or a container combination of potted plants.
  • Disease resistance breeding. In breeding Osteospermum for insect and disease resistance, we used genetic engineering technology to breed transgenic varieties with high resistance. These varieties have increased resistance, easy management, and can bloom several times, and now influence park landscaping.
