Breeding of Narcissus

Narcissus is a perennial bulb plant with richly colored flowers and some species with fragrance and is a well-known ornamental flower widely grown worldwide. Modern daffodil varieties first originated from wild species of daffodils in Spain and Portugal. Based on the rapid development in the fields of daffodil genetics, breeding, tissue culture, and pest control, a large number of daffodil varieties have been successfully bred. Currently, the main goal of daffodil breeding is to produce varieties with novel flower colors, strong fragrances, and resistance to fungal or viral diseases.

Lifeasible is committed to strengthening the application of modern bioengineering technology in narcissus breeding, establishing a gene transformation system for narcissus using tissue culture technology, and providing support for selecting and breeding new varieties of narcissus.

What We Follow

Based on the analysis of molecular mechanisms such as flower color and flower fragrance formation in Narcissus, we are working to create new varieties of Narcissus with altered or improved flower shape, flower color, and resistance using genetic engineering technology and protoplast fusion technology.

What We Provide

Flower Color Improvement

The flower colors of existing varieties of Narcissus are mainly yellow, white, orange, and peach-pink. Our scientists have been working on selecting and breeding all-red, all-pink, and all-pink varieties of Narcissus.

Flower Fragrance Improvement

Some species of the genus Narcissus are highly fragrant but less ornamental, while some have high ornamental value but no fragrance. We are committed to breeding varieties of Narcissus that are both fragrant and ornamental.

Flower Type Improvement

Most daffodils are cultivated in the open ground in some areas, and there are fewer potted varieties. We are committed to cultivating small potted varieties to meet the demand for indoor ornamental daffodils. We can help our customers screen new Narcissus varieties that are dwarf and suitable for pot culture with chemical mutagens such as alkylating agents of strong radiation sources such as 60Coγ and nucleic acid base analogs.

Disease Resistance Improvement

Basal rot spotted disease, and foliar disease are the serious diseases of Narcissus. Using chemicals to control pests and diseases not only substantially increases production costs but also brings about residual toxic hazards and environmental pollution. Our scientists are working to enhance the resistance of Narcissus to pests and diseases through genetic improvement.
