Molecular Breeding Solutions of Pea
INQUIRYIntroductions
Pea (scientific name: Pisum sativum L., 2n=2x=14), also known as English pea or green pea, is an annual climbing herb of the leguminous family. Pea is highly self-pollinated, due to the closed flower structure, and less than 1% of crosses. Pea is native to the Mediterranean and Central Asia. It is one of the most important cultivated crops in the world and one of the oldest domesticated crops. Both the tender pods and sprouts of peas can be eaten. Dried pea seeds are rich in protein, complex starch, fiber components, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, so they have become a valuable source of human consumption and livestock feed. The seeds also have strong, diuretic and antidiarrheal effects and can be used for medicinal purposes. The stems and leaves can cool and relieve the heat, and can be used as green manure, feed or fuel.
Since Mendel's experiments in the mid-18th century, pea breeding has achieved great success. However, in order to produce special peas on a large scale, it is obvious that there are still some traits that still need to be improved. At present, the main breeding goals of pea include improving resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, as well as improving yield and seed quality. In recent years, with the significant development and deployment of genomic tools for pea breeding, pea has benefited from next-generation sequencing and high-throughput genotyping technologies. These technologies paved the way for pea genome-wide association studies and genome selection methods.
