Breeding of Hemerocallis
INQUIRYHemerocallis is a perennial hosta with rich flower color, beautiful flower shape, and strong adaptability, which is an excellent landscaping plant. Breeding new high-quality varieties of Hemerocallis has shown good application prospects and high economic value.
Lifeasible is a comprehensive plant research company. We aim to provide effective solutions for ornamental flowers using advanced biotechnology to promote ornamental flower research and improve its application value.
Our breeding platform
- Hybrid breeding. So far, we have bred several Hemerocallis species using cross-breeding techniques. In addition to conventional crosses, we have also used a variety of pollen mixes as parents and obtained wide varieties with high ornamental value.
- Ploidy breeding. In Hemerocallis breeding, we treated the stem tips of adult Hemerocallis plants with colchicine and successfully induced Hemerocallis tetraploids. In addition, we also used tissue culture to induce polyploids. We have successfully treated Hemerocallis healing tissues with colchicine to breed new tetraploid Hemerocallis varieties.
- Molecular breeding. So far, we have genetically transformed Hemerocallis varieties to obtain several transgenic Hemerocallis varieties using the gene gun method. In addition, we isolated microsatellite coordinate polymorphisms of Hemerocallis to lay the foundation for further Hemerocallis molecular marker breeding.
What we offer
With the advancement of breeding technology, Hemerocallis has changed from a common flower with a single flower color and flower type to a bulk groundcover with tens of thousands of excellent varieties. We offer the following breeding solutions for Hemerocallis.
- Flower color breeding. Wild Hemerocallis has a single flower color, usually yellow, orange, and yellow. We have expanded the range of Hemerocallis crosses and selective breeding by requesting genetic factors from the gene pool. These factors alter Hemerocallis red pigment intensity and flower color distribution patterns. We have greatly enriched the Hemerocallis flower color through continuous hybrid selection. Also, using ploidy breeding techniques, we have bred diploid Hemerocallis varieties with blue flowers. In addition, we also offer tetraploid Hemerocallis varieties with golden edges.
- Flower type breeding. We aim to breed Hemerocallis varieties with a wide variety of flower types. For example, we have developed a variety of flower types, such as star, triangular, round, and spider. In addition, we have developed varieties with heavy and crinkly petals. So far, we have bred several tetraploid Hemerocallis varieties with heavy petals.
- Breeding for flowering time. Hemerocallis flowers are open for only one day. Therefore, extending the opening time of a single Hemerocallis flower is a crucial breeding goal to improve its ornamental value. In addition, extending the blooming period of Hemerocallis populations is also an important breeding goal, and we aim to breed more excellent early- and late-flowering varieties using crosses between early- and late-flowering varieties and varieties with high ornamental value.
