Breeding of Ornithogalum
INQUIRYOrnithogalum is a perennial herb native to South Africa and is now cultivated in many countries worldwide. Ornithogalum has long flowering branches, dense flowers, beautiful flowers, and high ornamental value. Ornithogalum not only has strong ornamental value but also has high medicinal value and potential value for ecological protection.

- Breeding Ornithogalum using tissue culture
The system of induction and tissue culture of Ornithogalum using bulbs and their stem cells, as well as using isolated leaves as explants, has been established and can maintain basic stability. This technology provides a new idea and a way to solve the problem of Ornithogalum regeneration difficulties. It also provides an innovative idea and model for the establishment of a molecular breeding platform for flowers and the industrial development of transgenic flowers
- Breeding Ornithogalum using gene editing technology
We provide the CRISPR/Cas9 system for gene editing, which has been widely used to improve the color of ornamental flower crops. In Ornithogalum, gene editing breeds improved flower color in Ornithogalum cultivars since anthocyanins and carotenoids are the pigments that have the greatest effect on flower color. And since carotenoids are the main pigments that produce yellow and orange hues in most tiger-eye orchid cultivars or hybrids, our preferred target for editing flower-specific genes is the carotenoid pathway. We combined gene editing techniques with completed Ornithogalum transcriptome data to breed new floral Ornithogalum varieties by mining key genes responsible for regulating Ornithogalum floral color. In addition, we added accumulation for targeted changes in Ornithogalum floral color. Our study provides a framework for applying CRISPR/CAS9 technology to improve Ornithogalum crops. So far, we have produced new Ornithogalum varieties with multiple flower colors, including red using gene editing technology.
