Breeding of Kalanchoe
INQUIRYThe native species of Kalanchoe are native to Madagascar. Kalanchoe has a long flowering period, drought tolerance, easy cultivation, good decorative effect, and high ornamental value, and it can be used as a whole herb for medicine. Therefore, it is widely liked by people around the world. At present, new Kalanchoe varieties have good prospects.
Lifeasible is dedicated to ornamental flower breeding research, and we have established an in vitro regeneration and fast breeding system for Kalanchoe in our long-lived flower breeding research and produced new Kalanchoe tetraploid germplasm with enlarged flowers and leaves and other ornamental organs, enhanced resistance to stress, and special ornamental and utilization values. We have also improved and bred several new Kalanchoe varieties of high quality by using hybrid breeding and genetic engineering techniques.
Our breeding platforms
Tissue culture and ploidy breeding
Through systematic research, we have explored the most suitable explants and the best fast breeding conditions. We have established the ex-vivo regeneration and fast breeding system for Kalanchoe. Meanwhile, we used in vitro culture combined with colchicine induction technology to induce polyploidy in Kalanchoe to obtain new polyploid types of Kalanchoe with better ornamental and stress resistance, laying the foundation for ploidy breeding of Kalanchoe. We used colchicine solution to treat Kalanchoe stem tips for polyploid in vitro induction to obtain new Kalanchoe tetraploid plants with giant nutritional organs, and thickened flower stems, increased number of flowers, and increased flowering period, which is a new type of flowering and foliage viewing with stronger ornamental properties.
Hybrid breeding
We have effectively promoted the development of new Kalanchoe varieties by using cross breeding and interspecific hybridization of Kalanchoe. The use of interspecific hybridization technology has improved Kalanchoe varieties. Currently, based on hybrid breeding technology, we have effectively improved Kalanchoe ornamental qualities such as flower color, flower type, and plant shape. We have also produced several new Kalanchoe varieties with higher ornamental value.
Genetic engineering for breeding
Using genetic engineering techniques, we aim to breed Kalanchoe varieties with even better traits. For example, we have used virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) technology to introduce genes related to reduced plant growth into Kalanchoe explants using Agrobacterium transformation and cultivated them with tissue culture techniques, successfully breeding a series of new Kalanchoe varieties with decreased plant height and compact plant size. In addition, using genetic engineering techniques, we have also produced Kalanchoe varieties with reduced sensitivity to ethylene. This variety of long-lived flowers can delay organ senescence and shedding.
