Breeding of Rhododendron simsii
INQUIRYIntroductions
Rhododendron simsii is native to Asia, and its range extends from Nepal to the Himalayas. Rhododendron simsii is divided into deciduous and evergreen deciduous species. The deciduous Rhododendron simsii is usually tall, erect, and less branched than the evergreen Rhododendron simsii. The breeding goal of Rhododendron simsii is to produce species with novel flower colors, flower shapes, and resistance to abiotic stresses.
Lifeasible is dedicated to breeding varieties with excellent flower fragrance, color, and resistance using genetic engineering techniques and patterns of gene expression for various traits in Rhododendron simsii.
What We Follow
To date unknown, the breeding of Rhododendron simsii is based almost exclusively on conventional crosses and the susceptibility to floral bud variation. Interspecific crosses and other breeding methods have less impacted commercial variety breeding. Genetic engineering can provide more advanced methods for innovation of Rhododendron simsii resources, eliminating interspecific hybridization barriers, and breeding new varieties. We use genome sequencing technology to study the gene regulation of each trait and to screen important candidate genes to breed new varieties for market demand.

What We Provide
Flower Color Improvement
Flavonoid substances are the main components of Rhododendron simsii flower color; according to a certain synthetic pathway, flavonoids can produce colorable anthocyanins and colorless flavonols. Flower color segregation in Rhododendron simsii is determined by three master effector genes and follows Mendelian inheritance laws. We analyze the expression patterns of key genes involved in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway and aim to breed Rhododendron simsii with new flower colors using molecular breeding techniques.
Flower Type Improvement
Rhododendron simsii mostly have single or double flowers. Highly double petals have a higher ornamental value and extend the flowering period. The structure of the floral organ can be interpreted by the ABC model, which consists of the MADS gene. We are working on MADS-related genes and genetic characteristics to produce Rhododendron simsii species with special flowering patterns.
Disease Resistance Improvement
When Rhododendron simsii is used as a garden plant, an important limiting factor for cultivation is its soil pH between 4.5 and 6.0. In calcareous soil species, severe iron deficiency greening symptoms and growth inhibition are often observed.
