Breeding of Hosta
INQUIRYHosta is a perennial plant; from the leaves to flowers has strong decorative effects, its leaf's ornamental effect is particularly striking. Hosta is cold-resistant, shade tolerant, highly adaptable, and has good resistance. The garden can be arranged in bushes, flower borders, flower groups, and forest ground cover applications, but it also can be potted ornamental, is an excellent shade-tolerant ground cover plant and decorative flowers, and plays an important role in the garden green space.
Lifeasible is committed to Hosta breeding and variety innovation, and currently focuses on breeding new Hosta varieties using hybrid breeding and mutagenesis. We provide solutions that advance Hosta breeding research progress and provide effective strategic guidance for enriching landscape plants.
Our breeding platform
We are currently using hybrid breeding, mutagenesis, and biotechnology in breeding new Hosta varieties.
- Most Hosta are diploid plants, and there is no reproductive isolation between almost all varieties, so hybrid breeding is easier and is the main way to breed Hosta. We are currently breeding various new varieties of Hosta with various excellent characteristics, such as tall plants, beautiful flowers, dense inflorescences, different flowering periods, fragrance, and resistance through hybrid breeding.
- Mutation breeding. Mutation breeding technology has been widely applied to selecting upcoming Hosta varieties. We can change Hosta genes through mutation by radiation and other means and thus produce Hosta varieties with new characteristics. We use artificial mutagenesis to change Hosta's genetic material to produce diverse changes in morphology, leaf color, flower color, and resistance in its progeny. We currently use them to breed new Hosta varieties by selecting individuals with suitable ornamental properties for cultivation. This is the case with Hostas that have undergone bud changes.
- Biotechnology breeding. So far, we have produced some new superior Hosta varieties with large and fragrant flowers adapted to a full-light environment. This was done through genetic engineering and molecular breeding techniques. In addition, we have used SSR molecular marker methods to analyze the genetic diversity of dozens of Hosta germplasm resources. This provides a basis for Hosta trait-related gene mining and appropriate allelic variant genes.
