Breeding of Ipomoea nil
INQUIRYIpomoea nil, native to Central America and Mexico, is a climbing plant with twining stems and high ornamental value. Ipomoea nil has funnel-shaped, colorful, and very showy flowers, often in dense clusters of up to five cymes, in which the fully developed flowers and developing buds stand together. Ipomoea nil leaves are hairy and emerald green, ovate to suborbicular shape.
Lifeasible is a leading international plant breeding company dedicated to ornamental flower breeding research. In our Ipomoea nil breeding research, we have used genetic engineering techniques to produce new varieties of Ipomoea nil with the distinctive flower colors and more ornamental value.
Our breeding platforms
Tissue culture
We used tissue culture technology combined with ploidy breeding to produce a new tetraploid Ipomoea nil germplasm with the dwarf, rich green leaves, growing corollas, increased petal ruffles, and slightly curled margins. By conducting this research, we have developed a method for Ipomoea nil germplasm innovation and laid the groundwork for selecting Ipomoea nil varieties in the future.
Genetic technology for breeding
We have used genetic engineering techniques, which have been effectively used to improve flower color, fragrance, and other traits of Ipomoea nil. In addition, we have used genetic engineering techniques in breeding new varieties.
- Initially, Ipomoea nil had only blue flowers, but after years of improvement and breeding, there are now red, peach, purple, teal, white, and other color varieties. Yellow flowers require carotenoids, aurone, and other yellow pigments in the plant. Ipomoea nil has a variety of flower color strains but lacks yellow flowers. We have successfully developed Ipomoea nil with yellow flowers and more spreading petals by implanting genes related to yellow aurone synthesis into Ipomoea nil varieties with cream-colored flowers using genetic engineering technology. Currently, we have obtained strains with improved Ipomoea nil traits using gene editing technology.
- Fragrance breeding. Using genetic engineering techniques, we transferred essential genes for jasmine aroma synthesis to Ipomoea nil. We bred transgenic Ipomoea nil with increased aroma composition and aroma quality than the wild type. We obtained Ipomoea nil breeding material with significantly increased aroma substances methyl benzoate and benzyl benzoate. This provides an effective solution for improving and breeding aroma in Ipomoea nil research.
