Breeding of Bellflower
INQUIRYBellflowers is native to East Asia and are generally grown on mountainous grassy slopes, forest margins, or cultivated. Bellflowers has high ornamental value due to their colorful and graceful flowers, and they also have certain medicinal value, with the effects of phlegm, expectorant, and pus drainage. Therefore, it is essential to use advanced biotechnology to breed high-quality bellflower varieties to improve and modify the ornamental characteristics of bellflower and bring out its greater efficacy.
Lifeasible is dedicated to ornamental flower breeding research, and we aim to breed more ornamental plants using advanced biotechnology. In our research on breeding new, high-quality varieties of bellflower, we have worked with plant researchers around the world to significantly advance the breeding of bellflowers and improve the ornamental quality of bellflowers.
Our breeding platform
- Polyploid breeding
Bellflower breeding has obtained tetraploid strains using colchicine to induce bellflower healing tissues. By characterizing the agronomic traits of the obtained strains, we found that the tetraploid plants had increased stem thickness, increased leaf area, increased thickness, and increased root yield. We determined the content of Platycodin D with HPLC-ELSD and found that its saponin D content was significantly higher than that of diploid plants but also than that of commercial herbs. Thus, using polyploid breeding techniques, new varieties of bellflower were produced that not only enriched Eustoma's ornamental properties but also had higher medicinal value.
- Mutagenesis in breeding
We use physical and chemical factors to induce mutations in bellflower genetic characteristics, select single plants from the mutant population that meets the breeding requirements, and then breed them into new bellflower varieties. Currently, the mutation breeding technology we provide has the advantages of a high mutation rate, wide mutation, fast stabilization of progeny traits, and short breeding cycle in cultivating new bellflower varieties, and it has become an effective way to cultivate fresh bellflower varieties.
