Breeding of Lonicera japonica

Our breeding platform
- Selective breeding. Through selective breeding, we have produced high-quality varieties with large buds, long flower needles, thick petals, strong erectness, sturdy stems and branches, short flowering internodes, longer flowering periods, and increased resistance to adversity. - Polyploid breeding. Using polyploid breeding techniques, we have produced tetraploid plants of Lonicera japonica. These plants exhibit excellent ornamental characteristics with strong erect stem branches, stout, short internodes, broad leaves with a deeper leaf color, and larger and more numerous flower buds. In addition, we bred polyploid Lonicera japonica varieties to increase the yield of Lonicera japonica and improve its active ingredient content.
- Molecular breeding. We breed Lonicera japonica biotechnologically based on conventional breeding. For example, we have established the linkage between the genetic variation of markers or candidate genes and target traits by constructing molecular markers and genetic maps. We have further developed Lonicera japonica through molecular marker-assisted breeding and functional gene localization and cloning. We have developed new varieties of Lonicera japonica with more colorful flowers and significantly improved their ornamental quality.
