- Hybrid breeding
We offer hybrid breeding for targeted breeding of superior varieties with complementary parental traits, the main means of Nelumbo nucifera breeding. Through crosses between varieties within the Nelumbo nucifera breeding line, excellent varieties with complementary parental traits can be obtained. Through interspecific distant crosses, it is possible to breed hybrids with different flower types between the two parents. These hybrids have flower colors closer to the parent and higher ornamental qualities. - Bud mutation
Bud mutation is a somatic mutation. Bud transformation occurs in the cells of the meristematic tissue of the bud. When the bud sprouts and grows into a branch, it exhibits a different trait from the original. We offer many applications in breeding Nelumbo nucifera through bud change breeding. So far, we have bred various varieties of Nelumbo nucifera, such as heavy table type and thousand petal-type, by using bud change breeding technology.
There are few natural polyploid varieties of Nelumbo nucifera. Artificially induced polyploid breeding can increase lotus root yield, which has high economic and commercial value. It is also one of the effective ways to breed large Nelumbo nucifera varieties suitable for lake and pond beautification. So far, we have bred some tetraploid plants with peculiar flower patterns, high numbers of flowers, and brilliant colors using ploidy breeding techniques. These polyploid Nelumbo nucifera plants have larger plants, stout petioles, and large and colorful flowers.
