Breeding of Syringa oblata
INQUIRYSyringa oblata is a deciduous shrub or small tree, a famous garden tree with large inflorescences, luxuriant flowers, light and fragrant flowers, a robust habit, and easy cultivation.
Lifeasible combines traditional breeding with advanced breeding techniques to bring out Syringa oblata's rich genetic diversity. We continue to provide effective solutions for breeding numerous varieties of Syringa oblata with excellent ornamental traits.
Our breeding platform
- Hybrid breeding. We obtained an excellent gene pool of Syringa oblata through a purposeful hybridization program, from which we selected the identified plants as parents. We use intraspecific crosses to make Syringa oblata flowers or inflorescences larger, with enhanced color, dwarf plants, etc. By hybrid breeding, we integrate the characteristics of both parents into the hybrid progeny, resulting in progeny with higher ornamental value and other quality characteristics. Meanwhile, we use interspecific hybrid breeding by crossing species within the same lineage with different regional distributions and ecotypes. The progeny shows genetic variation superior to both parents in ornamental traits such as flower color, inflorescence, and morphology. So far, we have developed effective solutions for breeding new varieties of Syringa oblata, including early-flowering hardy, large-flowered, heavy-petaled dark purple, etc., Using hybrid breeding techniques.
- Ploidy breeding. Using our artificially induced Syringa oblata polyploidy breeding method, we are breeding new polyploid varieties of Syringa oblata in which an increase in chromosome number is expressed in the external morphology. For example, we bred tetraploid Syringa oblata with thicker and leathery leaves, thickened petals, larger florets, and panicles, deepened flower color with new chromaticity and increased plant resistance.
- Sport breeding. Sport is a break in the chromosome gene chain, not a doubling of chromosomes, as in the case of polyploids. We have bred several Syringa oblata variants in new varieties of Syringa oblata using bud change breeding, such as reddened leaf color, small purple flowers with white margins, yellow flowers, and different flower colors in the same plant.
