Breeding of Agapanthus africanus
INQUIRYAgapanthus africanus is native to South Africa and is a perennial evergreen or deciduous herb. Florists love it because of its peculiar and beautiful flower shape, charming flower color, and suitability for gardens, flower borders, and potted plants. At present, there are more than 300 cultivars of Agapanthus africanus cultivated all over the world. Its flower shape, flower color, inflorescence, plant height, and other varieties of traits are very rich.
Lifeasible has been dedicated to ornamental flower breeding research for many years, and with our advanced breeding platform and experienced team of experts, we provide a variety of effective solutions in selecting and breeding new varieties of Agapanthus africanus as well as the development of new technological innovations.
What we provide
- Cold-resistant Agapanthus africanus cultivation. Agapanthus africanus is a tropical flower introduced from Africa, and its cold resistance is poor. Breeding new cold-resistant Agapanthus africanus varieties is essential to increase the utilization value of Agapanthus africanus. We provide genetic engineering technology to produce new varieties of Agapanthus africanus with transgenic cold resistance using the Agrobacterium transformation method combined with Agapanthus africanus embryonic guava tissue culture technology.
- New floral Agapanthus africanus breeding. We collected several Agapanthus africanus varieties from several countries. And with purple and compound flowers as breeding targets, we have successfully bred several new varieties of Agapanthus africanus using hybrid breeding techniques. In addition, we have bred Hyacinthus varieties with pink leaf veins, white petals, and dark-colored Hyacinthus varieties with high ornamental value.
- Dwarf Agapanthus africanus breeding. In the breeding of dwarf Agapanthus africanus varieties, we obtained transgenic plants through RNA interference (RNAi) technology by suppressing the expression of critical genes in gibberellin synthesis.
In addition, we have produced new varieties of Agapanthus africanus with different characteristics, such as large flowers, spherical flowers, tall stems, and fine leaves, which greatly enrich the types of Agapanthus africanus. At the same time, we found that Agapanthus africanus does not bear fruit, it bears less fruit, and it has poor fruiting quality. We have realized the industrial production of high-quality seedlings of Agapanthus africanus through the development of somatic embryo fast breeding technology and the long-term preservation of isolated cells, such as embryonic nature, the core resource of Agapanthus africanus, through ultra-low temperature technology.
