Breeding of Camellia japonica
INQUIRYCamellia japonica is an evergreen shrub or small tree. Camellia japonica is a beautiful plant with lustrous green leaves and colorful flowers, which is one of the most essential plant landscaping materials and can also be used as flower arrangement and cut flower material and can be planted on a large scale into special gardens with high ornamental value.

Our breeding platform
We have conducted research on hybridization, ploidy, mutagenesis, and other techniques with Camellia japonica germplasm and have bred more new-generation varieties with good ornamental properties, wide adaptability, and strong resistance to diseases and insects. We have established a system to rescue young embryos of distant hybrids by using the mechanism of incompatibility of distant hybrids and techniques to overcome the incompatibility of distant hybrids of Camellia japonica. Using new gene editing techniques such as CRISPR, with ornamental adaptability and disease and insect resistance as the main improvement targets, we constructed a mature experimental technology system. We created new germplasm to breed new varieties. In addition, we have used molecular marker-assisted breeding techniques to effectively guide Camellia japonica hybrid breeding and variety identification.
What we provide
- Flower color. We aim to breed more colorful varieties of Camellia japonica, including breeding yellow Camellia japonica varieties with particularly valuable ornamental value, with a variety of flower colors, including light yellow, golden yellow, and orange-yellow. In addition, we use yellow Camellia japonica as the parent and white, pink, and red Camellia japonica as the parent, and crossbreed several intermediate color Camellia japonica varieties such as red and yellow. It greatly enriches the flower color of Camellia japonica.
- Flower fragrance. In our Camellia japonica fragrance breeding, we aim to produce new varieties of Camellia japonica with a pleasant fragrance.
- Flowering period. By using interspecific hybridization technology, we have more options for selecting the flowering period of Camellia japonica. This is also easier to master and important for regulating flowering.
- Tree shape. To solve the rough appearance of Camellia japonica and the asymmetry of branches and leaves, we have bred more Camellia japonica varieties with better tree shapes. For example, we cultivate potted varieties of Camellia japonica with medium flowers, small leaves, and dense branches for appearance.
