Breeding excellent varieties of Rhododendron using genetic engineering breeding technology

With the continuous development and progress of breeding work, we are also committed to solving the difficulties in cultivation and planting in Rhododendron breeding. For example, we have used Rhododendron healing tissue as the recipient material and introduced the salt resistance gene AtNHXI gene into the Rhododendron genome through Agrobacterium-mediated methods, providing a reliable experimental basis for salt-tolerant and alkali-tolerant Rhododendron breeding. In addition, we used genetic engineering technology to show good application in breeding insect-resistant Rhododendron species, cold-resistant Rhododendron species, and heat-resistant Rhododendron species.
Flower color, as one of the most ornamental traits of Rhododendron, has always been a hot spot for research. The common azalea flower colors are red and white, compared with yellow and blue, which have higher ornamental value, but there are relatively few varieties. We have analyzed the pigment composition of Rhododendron and the expression of genes regulating flower color using molecular marker technology and transgenic technology. We have provided effective techniques and strategies for azalea flower color selection. For example, we discovered and analyzed the structures of various species of anthocyanins by HPLC with the H-1-NMR technique in the study of Rhododendron anthocyanins. In addition, we have provided crucial theoretical guidance for flower color breeding of cold-tolerant azaleas by analyzing the composition of Rhododendron and the changes in its flower color and anthocyanin composition and content during the flowering process. In contrast, we have determined that the flower color of Rhododendron can be bred in two directions, from red tones and blue tones, based on the composition of anthocyanins. So far, we have realized various Rhododendron colors such as white, red, vermilion, pink, purple, and lavender in Rhododendron flower color breeding.
