Breeding of Viola tricolor L.
INQUIRYViola tricolor L. are hardy perennial herbs. There are many varieties of Viola tricolor L. with bright colors, and the main feature is the obvious dark spots on the flowers. With the breeding of varieties in the past two years, new varieties, such as the crinkly-petaled pansy, have emerged. Viola tricolor L. is a popular flower for bedding and potted plants and is in high demand, but breeding research is still relatively backward.
Lifeasible is now one of the most innovative flower companies in the world. We research, breed, and produce ornamental flowering plants. We aim to create exceptional varieties of flowers that help our customers throughout the value chain achieve exceptional success.
Our breeding platform
We have conducted more detailed research on the genetics and improvement of major ornamental traits, nutritional traits, and resistance of Viola tricolor L. Numerous research results have been achieved through hybrid breeding, polyploid breeding, mutagenesis breeding, and tissue culture techniques. We have also accelerated the breeding of new Viola tricolor varieties.
- Hybrid breeding
Hybrid breeding is one of the most common and effective methods of breeding new Viola tricolor L. varieties. In recent years, we have produced several hybrids through our continuous efforts.
For polyploid induction in Viola tricolor L., we mostly use aqueous colchicine immersion treatment to obtain chromosomally doubled plants. In addition to stomatal size as an indicator of ploidy, leaf shape index, hypocotyl length, and thickness can also be used for ploidy identification. In addition, we can distinguish mixed ploidy from aneuploidy easily and quickly with flow cytometry.
- Mutagenesis in breeding
Radiation mutagenesis as an effective mutagenesis tool in flower variety breeding and improvement has shown a very significant role and a very attractive application prospect. We treated the seeds of several varieties of Viola tricolor L. with 300 Gy of 60 Co-γ. We found that the flowering period and flower traits of different varieties were affected to different degrees.
- Biotechnology in breeding
Molecular marker technology has been used for basic breeding studies of Viola tricolor L. We used RAPD to analyze the genetic diversity of several Viola tricolor L. self-ed lines. We showed some reliability in predicting the flower number and hybrid advantage of Viola tricolor L. Based on RAPD genetic distance.
What we provide
- Flower color. Flower color is one of the most significant indicators of ornamental value Viola tricolor L. We use gene editing technology and cross breeding techniques to produce a variety of varieties with specific flower colors.
- Flower type. Flower type is also one of the key goals of Viola tricolor L. breeding. We have continuously improved the flower shape to be round or nearly round. We have also developed a variety of ruffled petals with wavy petals.
- Nutritional traits. Nutritional traits such as plant height, width, number of branches, and leaf area per plant are closely related to ornamental value. However, they are not the main ornamental objectives.
- Resistant varieties.Viola tricolor L. is heat-resistant and grows poorly in the hot summer, so we should focus on the selection and breeding of heat-resistant varieties and drought-resistant varieties. In addition, we screen for pest and disease resistance through crossbreeding.
