Breeding for High Quality and High Yielding Barley
INQUIRYWhy Breed High Quality and High Yielding Barley?
Barley, Hordeum vulgare, one of the major cereals planted in the world, is a founder crop of the early food production and one of the earliest crops domesticated. It is an important crop, ranking fourth in world crop production. Barley is used for animal feed, brewing malts and human food. Nowadays, food security has become a major issue, human population is expected to reach 10 billion by 2050. To meet the need to feed an increasing number of people, we need high quality and high yielding barley.
Breeding Services for High Quality and High Yielding Barley
Traditional breeding shows disadvantages such as uncontrollable, long cycle and more interference. Multiple quality and yielding related genes had been reported. Lifeasible provides numbers of methods to accelerate the breeding process of high quality and high yielding barley.
- QTL Mapping: A candidate gene approach which is performed in constructed bi-parental populations with contrasting parents to detect various QTLs and then estimate its position and effect on the plant traits after introgression.
- Gene Mapping: A method that the genetic markers are developed and a population is mapped to identify the distances between genes via analysis of co-segregation patterns and specific locus of a gene based solely on their phenotypic effect.
- Marker-assisted Selection: A type of indirect selection for the desired plant phenotype which is based on the linked molecular markers banding pattern.
- Tilling by sequencing (Tbys): A general reverse genetics strategy which includes mutagenesis of a large plant population followed by identification of point mutations in the gene of interest via high-throughput detection system.
- Transgenics: biotechnological interventions, including genetic engineering, RNA silencing technologies, and gene editing.
