Breeding of Cyclamen

INQUIRY

Cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum) is a perennial tuberous herbaceous flowering plant of the genus cyclamen in the family Primulaceae. It is native to the southeast of the Mediterranean coast. It is an excellent winter and spring flowering plant with a long and colorful flowering period and is very popular among flower growers.

Lifeasible is dedicated to plant research and has many years of experience in cyclamen cultivation. To date, we have worked with horticulturists worldwide to produce, using advanced biotechnology, varieties in various colors, including blue. We have also produced varieties with high disease resistance and high-stress tolerance, including heat resistance.

Breeding of Cyclamen

Our breeding platform

We use tissue culture to breed cyclamen using pistils, tubers, leaves, and young stems as explants, usually collected from first- and second-year-old plants, with the tubers being the easiest to induce seedlings. MS medium can be used for tubers as explants. At present, we have used seedling cotyledons, petioles, tubers, and roots to produce cyclamen on a large scale. The tissue culture of cyclamen can maintain the plant's excellent traits and has a high reproduction rate. By using the tissue culture method, we have created a system of asexual propagation of superior cyclamen, which has the advantage of restoring and maintaining the breeding characteristics of the plant and of reproducing superior varieties in large quantities, thus solving the problem of the quality of seedlings to produce cyclamen.

  • Transgenic breeding of cyclamen

The use of genetic modification to produce blue cyclamen

Breeding blue flowering cyclamen allows us to enrich the existing cyclamen varieties and meet market demand. Transgenic breeding of blue flowers relies heavily on the physiological environment and in vitro regeneration. We have completed the selection of the recipient varieties and constructing an in vitro regeneration system for the genetic engineering of blue cyclamen. In blue cyclamen breeding, we have selected cyclamen recipient varieties suitable for transferring genes related to blue pigment synthesis. We have established an in vitro regeneration system based on genetic engineering breeding. This technology has helped us to improve the reproductive efficiency of the plant, promote its products and to speed up the genetic engineering process of the blue-flowered cyclamen varieties, which is significant for the molecular breeding of cyclamen.

In addition, we have used genetic engineering to breed novel and exotic varieties of cyclamen, high-temperature resistant varieties of cyclamen, and insect-resistant varieties of cyclamen.
