Breeding of Lycoris
INQUIRYLycoris is a richly colored, graceful, and adaptable flower that can decorate flower beds, mirrors, and bushes. It can also be used as an understory groundcover and cut flower. Lycoris plays a perfect regulating role in the landscape, has high ornamental value, and is widely used worldwide. It is of great practical importance to breed Lycoris species with good adaptability and ornamental properties.
Lifeasible is dedicated to plant breeding research. We have used conventional breeding techniques and advanced biotechnology to breed several new Lycoris species, which have greatly improved Lycoris ornamental and application.
Breeding applications of Lycoris
- Research value. Chromosomal diversity exists in Lycoris; therefore, flower colors and flower types corresponding to chromosomal polymorphism also appear. This makes it an excellent research material for cytogenetics, developmental biology, and other fields.
- Ornamental value. Lycoris has high ornamental value due to its rich variation in flower shape and color. It is widely used in landscaping and roadside greenery because of its adaptability and low pest and disease damage.
- Lycoris alkaloids can be used medicinally.
Our breeding platform
We use a combination of conventional breeding and genetic engineering techniques to provide a comprehensive solution for breeding new cold-tolerant, flower-specific, new-flowered Lycoris varieties.
- Tissue culture. Tissue culture technology is an effective way of Lycoris breeding, and by researching histoculture fast breeding technology and efficient breeding technology for Lycoris bulbs, we have significantly improved breeding efficiency and laid the foundation for Lycoris ploidy breeding and genetic engineering breeding.
- The genus Lycoris has high ornamental and medicinal value, and there are abundant germplasm resources of Lycoris with different morphological characteristics of different species. Using hybrid breeding techniques, we aim to breed excellent Lycoris species with different flower colors, flowering periods, flower type, leaf type, and leaf stage. This can meet ornamental demand and the need of industry and medicine.
- Molecular breeding. Lycoris is an excellent ground cover and flower mirror plant in landscaping and an ideal material for potted and fresh cut flowers in the flower industry. However, most Lycoris are not hardy enough for planting in small areas. Therefore, we have used genetic engineering technology to introduce the excavated cold resistance genes into Lycoris and produced new cold-tolerant Lycoris varieties, making Lycoris a broader range of suitability. In addition, we also used genetic engineering technology to clone essential enzyme genes in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway. This laid the foundation for the selection of new Lycoris flower color varieties.
