Breeding of Zantedeschia albomaculata
INQUIRYZantedeschia albomaculata is a perennial bulbous flower whose ornamental part is its spathe. Zantedeschia albomaculata has a wide range of adaptations, is easy to cultivate, and its spathe is erect and upright, beautiful, and colorful. Zantedeschia albomaculata in the flower market is a high-end potted flower with high economic value. Therefore, breeding Zantedeschia albomaculata is of significant practical importance.

Our breeding platform
We have continuously strengthened research on breeding new varieties of Zantedeschia albomaculata and combined traditional breeding techniques with modern breeding techniques such as radiation breeding, ploidy breeding, and biotechnology breeding to produce new varieties of Zantedeschia albomaculata with rich flower color and disease resistance.
- Tissue culture. We have established a breeding system for Zantedeschia albomaculata tissue culture, including the establishment of the best site for taking different Zantedeschia albomaculata explants, the best time for taking explants and the best sterilization method, and improved the method for inducing the growth of Zantedeschia albomaculata explants to branch. The tissue culture technology we provide has fast propagation and easy management in breeding new varieties of Zantedeschia albomaculata. The new varieties we have bred using the tissue culture technique are characterized by strong plant growth, neat flowering, and high flower production. In addition, we have obtained new yellow Zantedeschia albomaculata tetraploid germplasm based on tissue culture technology combined with colchicine chemical induction.
- Hybrid breeding. We use hybridization technology to integrate the characteristics of both parents of Zantedeschia albomaculata into the hybrid progeny. This enables breeding new varieties with richer flower colors and higher disease resistance. At present, the new varieties of Zantedeschia albomaculata we obtained through hybrid breeding have various flower colors such as deep red, orange-yellow, goose-yellow, and golden-yellow, and exhibit excellent characteristics such as neat flower stems, compact plants, and strong disease resistance.
- Molecular breeding. Bacterial soft rot is a significant cause of loss in the production of colored Zantedeschia albomaculata. The disease can infect all hybrids of Zantedeschia albomaculata of various colors to varying degrees. We provided genetic engineering technology to introduce genes obtained from screening for resistance to bacterial soft rot into Zantedeschia albomaculata. This provided an effective breeding guide for obtaining varieties of Zantedeschia albomaculata resistant to bacterial soft rot.
